The Unit had just been formed, and Chris was one of the handpicked team chosen by the leader, David Stirling.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-881\" href=\"http:\/\/shrule.com\/?attachment_id=881\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-881 alignleft\" title=\"dared\" src=\"http:\/\/shrule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/dared-104x150.png\" alt=\"dared and died\" width=\"104\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.shrule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/dared-104x150.png 104w, http:\/\/www.shrule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/dared.png 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 104px) 100vw, 104px\" \/><\/a>The two men had already fought together with Churchill&#8217;s Commandos, and Stirling knew a good soldier when he saw one. For eighteen months the S.A.S. harried Rommel&#8217;s army across the desert until the final victory at El Alamein \u2013 the turning point in the war. In July 1943 the S.A.S. spearheaded the invasion of Sicily , and from there they were ordered to the mainland.
