LOCAL CULTURE & HISTORY

Shrule’s Two Churches

St. Colman’s Church

Teampall Cholmain, the impressive ecclesiastical ruin standing imperiously on the highest point in Shrule Cemetery shares the same name as one of our oldest saints, Naomh Colman Mac Duagh who was born in Kiltartan Co Galway circa 550. The son of a local chieftain he became a priest and went to study on the largest of the Aran Islands, Inish Mór, in the community set up by Naomh Éanna. Colman is associated with two churches on the island, both bearing his name, Teampall mór Mhic Duagh & Teampall beg Mhic Duagh. He later went to live in the Burren where he established his monastery at Kilmacduagh.

“The great parish church of Shrule, known as Teampall Cholmain, is attributed to the descendants of the great Turlough O’Connor … [and is] built in the Gothic style. Its immense size emphasises the importance it held among the great parish churches of the period. It was built between 1170 and 1230, and on the very same site as that of an earlier one, and on the very ground where it is said St. Patrick planted his crozier.” (Source: Shrule 2000 – a profile pp.9-10). For, “(T)radition has it that St. Patrick on his westward journey crossed the Black River here by its well-known ford [and] then near it was [later] built a large … church dedicated to St. Colman.” (Ibid.p.14). Shrule can thus hold some claim to having a Patrician influence in its Christian origins (Ibid.p.16).

St. Joseph’s Church

According to the same source (Shrule 2000) the original church, the second oldest in the diocese, was erected on land donated by the Kirwan family of Dalgan Park, Shrule around 1832. The Kirwan’s also contributed £1,300 towards the work. Later in the century, in 1876, major reconstruction work was carried out and in that same year the church was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin. The marble altarpiece was presented to Shrule by T. Martyn Esq.

In 1938-39 a new 65 feet high tower was added when Fr. Feeney was P.P. The church was then re-dedicated to St. Joseph by Dr. Browne, Bishop of Galway that year, 1939. The sanctuary was changed after the Second Vatican Council. This work was carried out under the direction of Fr. Kyne P.P. in 1966. Fr. Rooney P.P. undertook the carpeting of the church and sanctuary in 1989.

This Church was originally built as a Protestant chapel, but it was not used due to a lack of parishioners. It was instead given to the Roman Catholics of the community when the thatched roof of Teampall Cholmain was burned down. The main door of the new church was on the Kilmaine side of the building and has since been blocked up, but a decoration, consisting of three balls placed in a triangle above the door, can still be seen. As this decoration is a freemason sign and cannot normally be found on a Catholic Church, it seems to support the original stated intentions for the usage of the building (Source: Shrule 2000 – a profile pp.8-9).

Shrule Community Newsletter Saturday March 17 2013 / Volume 1, Issue 2 / Cost: 20 cent c/o Information Hub, Shrule Community Centre, Shrule, Co.
