Hello Brendan, I understand your father mentioned a newspaper called the Ballina National Times on page 379 of his book entitled ‘History of Mayo’. According to ‘ Longmans Handbook of Modern Irish History Since 1800’ Page362 Pub 2002 this newspaper circulated in Ballina ca 1866-1867 and its proprietor was John Bourns. My g-grandfather was John Bourns who lived all his life in Ballina. Records prove that he was a printer in King St. from at the latest April 1855 until his death in Oct 1912. According to family hearsay, at some point he was the proprietor of a newspaper. Unfortunately, apart from recalling that the title included the word Ballina I know no more. I wonder if it was the one mentioned by your father? Did he by any chance mention if copies of the paper are archived anywhere? Some years ago I found and article in a 1940s Ballina Herald written by your father in which he also mentioned two broadsheets ca 1865: The Bee by W’m Kearney & The Wasp by John Burns (sic).
If you can throw any light onto any f the above I’d be eternally grateful.
Hello Brendan. I am interested in a document “unpublished and in a British Museum” relating to St. Fechin and possibly Cong, which is mentioned in Vol 3. Can you shed any light on such document now at this remove. Your father’s contribution to Co. Mayo- he being a Sligo Man is way up there higher than the Jackie Clarke Museum in Ballin. thank God for his brilliance, dedication and generosity. Ar rath De go raibh a hanam dilis. Mary
